Scope Of Services

Green Laser

The green laser used in eye care generally refers to a 532 nm wavelength laser (green light) and is typically used in various ophthalmic procedures due to its high visibility and precision. This wavelength is particularly effective for targeting certain tissues in the eye, making it an essential tool in managing several eye conditions.

Key Features of Green Laser in Eye Care:

1. Wavelength:
  • The green laser operates at a wavelength of 532 nm, which is in the green portion of the visible light spectrum. This wavelength is highly absorbed by pigmented tissues, especially melanin, which makes it ideal for procedures where precise targeting of tissues is needed.
2. Common Uses in Eye Care:
  • Laser Photocoagulation:
Retinal diseases: Green lasers are used in laser photocoagulation to treat various retinal conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal vein occlusion. This involves applying laser energy to create controlled burns that can seal leaking blood vessels or destroy abnormal growth of blood vessels in the retina.
  • Glaucoma Treatment:
Laser Trabeculoplasty: Green lasers are also used in glaucoma treatment, specifically in a procedure called laser trabeculoplasty. The laser is used to help increase fluid drainage from the eye, thereby lowering intraocular pressure (IOP), which is a critical factor in managing glaucoma.
  • Iridotomy for Glaucoma:
In cases of angle-closure glaucoma, a green laser followed by Yag Laser can be used to perform an iridotomy, creating a small hole in the iris to allow better fluid drainage and relieve pressure in the eye.
3. How the Procedure Works:
  • In laser photocoagulation, the green laser focuses energy onto specific areas of the retina to treat abnormal blood vessels or to reduce swelling. This procedure is typically performed in a single session and can be done in an outpatient setting.
  • For glaucoma, the green laser targets the trabecular meshwork (drainage system of the eye) to improve drainage and lower intraocular pressure.
4. Advantages:
  • Precision: The green laser provides highly precise targeting, especially in delicate areas like the retina or optic nerve.
  • Effectiveness: It is highly effective for treating a range of retinal diseases and managing glaucoma.
  • Minimal discomfort: Most procedures involving the green laser are relatively quick and involve little discomfort, although some patients may experience temporary visual disturbances or mild discomfort post-treatment.
5. Considerations:
  • Visual Changes: Some patients may experience temporary blurred vision or floaters after treatment.
6. Procedure Duration:
  • Most green laser eye treatments are relatively quick, typically lasting from a few minutes to about half an hour, depending on the complexity and the area being treated.

Summary:

The green laser (532 nm) is used in various eye care procedures, including treating retinal diseases (like diabetic retinopathy), managing glaucoma, and performing iridotomies along with Yag Laser for angle-closure glaucoma. The laser is highly effective due to its precision and ability to target pigmented tissues, allowing for controlled treatment with minimal discomfort for patients.
