Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which is crucial for vision. The damage is often caused by an increase in intraocular pressure (IOP), or the pressure inside the eye. Over time, this pressure can harm the optic nerve and lead to vision loss, and if untreated, it can result in blindness.
There are different types of glaucoma, with open-angle glaucoma being the most common. It develops slowly and painlessly, often without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss has occurred. Angle-closure glaucoma is less common but more urgent, and it can cause rapid vision loss and requires immediate medical attention.
Glaucoma is usually associated with aging, but other factors like genetics, eye injury, high blood pressure, and certain medications can increase the risk of developing it. Regular eye exams are important for detecting glaucoma early, as it is often asymptomatic until it is advanced.
Treatment for glaucoma typically includes medications (such as eye drops to lower eye pressure) and sometimes surgery to improve drainage or reduce pressure within the eye.
